10 Uses for Lavender Essential Oil

How to use Lavender Essential Oil | LavenderandLatte.comToday, I’m spotlighting Lavender essential oil! Lavender is called the “Swiss Army Knife” of essential oils because it is so versatile and has so many uses!

Lavender essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops of the plant, and did you know that it takes approximately 27 square feet of lavender plants to create one 15-ml bottle of essential oil?!

Lavender is one of the most popular essential oils on the market, but trust me, not all Lavender is created the same. Find a high-quality source. I personally love Young Living (how to order) and how their Lavender essential oil literally smells like cut lavender from the plant – a bit earthy, not like perfume.

You may notice that Young Living has Lavender available with two different labels. Why? It’s the exact same oil, but according to product labeling guidelines, a product cannot be used for both topical and dietary uses.

  • Lavender (for topical and aromatic use)
  • Lavender Vitality (white labels – supplement line for dietary/internal use)

Below is a list of 10 uses for Lavender and Lavender Vitality essential oil, but really… if you’re ever in doubt of what oil to use…try lavender!

1. Relaxation

Unwind by adding a few drops to a nighttime bath with some Epsom salts (~15 drops per cup of Epsom salts). Or give a relaxing massage with a few drops of lavender with jojoba oil (or other carrier oil) – great for kids and adults at bedtime!

2. Make a DIY Linen Spray/Air Freshener

Add a few drops of Lavender to a small spray bottle water and one teaspoon of witch hazel. Spray bedding, curtains, the couch, pet beds, closets, etc.

3. Promote Restful Sleep

Add a drop to your pillow or diffuse nightly at bedtime. You can read more about my favorite essential oil combinations to diffuse at bedtime, here.

4. Chill Out

Diffuse for a comforting and calming atmosphere, anytime. Here’s my Puppy Pacifier recipe that helps reduce stress in dogs, and it works for humans, too!

5. Soothe Skin

Just 2 drops of Lavender along with almond oil as a carrier oil can do wonders for your skin. Or make a DIY after-sun spray:  In a 4 oz spray bottle add 10 drops of Lavender and 10 drops of Peppermint essential oil, 2 Tbsp of pure aloe vera gel, and 1/2 cup of witch hazel or distilled water, and shake before use!

6. Beauty

A few drops of Lavender may complement some of your favorite shampoos, lotions, or skin care products. Or you can make your own! Here’s a recipe for my easy, customizable facial toner.

7. Eliminate Odors

Diffuse for a fresh, clean scent and to get rid of odors.

8. Make Lavender Lemonade

Add a few drops of Lavender Vitality to your favorite lemonade recipe, I like this one for a low-sugar, healthier option!

9. Lush Lashes

For lush lashes, add a drop of Lavender to your mascara and use the wand to mix it in. Yes, do it!

10. Freshen Laundry

Add a couple of drops of Lavender to each of your wool dryer balls (or wet cloth) and use instead of traditional, toxic dryer sheets. The wool dryer balls help to reduce static and drying time, and the Lavender infuses linens and clothes with a fresh scent!
